- Helps us to organize, process data and information
- Helps the lecturers test students on how well to captured given information
WHY REVIEW NOTES ?
◊ Lose 80% of what we hear within few hours
◊ Identify any questions for peers, next classes or ask proffesors
◊ Not enough time to absorb all the informations given in class
◊ Ace it for any test that are given by lecturers
WHY ‘RECAPTURE’ NOTES AFTER CLASS ?
⇒ Frees you up to write in quick and short during class

⇒ Better than recopying, this time you are digesting and rephrasing
WHAT MATERIALS DO WE NEED ?
BEFORE CLASS:
- Review the notes from the day before
- Review your reading assignments
- Make sure you have paper, text, pencils handout
- Write the date at the top of your paper for notes
- Leave spaces between the line so we can add up new informations
PHYSICAL FACTORS:
♦ Seating
⇒ Near the front and center ( better vision, better hearing )
⇒ Avoid distraction ( peers, doorways, window glare )
HOW DO WE TAKE NOTES ?
√ Date and label notes
√ Give ourselves space to write
√ Use abbreviation or symbols ⇓
√ Use an outline to show:
- main ideas
- supports
- examples
√ Use your own language
AFTER CLASS:
- Review notes
- Make your own questions and examples
- Discuss and compare answers with group members
- Rewrite your notes
- Practice those skills you wish to develop
- Ask proffesor for clarification
HOW DO WE PREPARE FOR CLASS ?
♦ Do prereading and homework
♦ Review syllabus
♦ Preview previous notes
♦ Look of keywords prior to class
♦ Plan on listening 80% of the time
♦ Write date on the top of your paper
♦ Leave spaces between the lines
WHILE TAKING NOTES…
→ Be aggressive. Not a passive listener
→ Ask questions and discuss if it is permitted
- If not jot questions
- Discover the meaning
MOOD OF LECTURERS:
◊ Observation is the key
- Keep observers focus their attention on the details and make the most of their time during lectures by preparing and reviewing before the lecturers even lectures
- Complete the assignments outside; the more familiar you are with the subject, the more easier it takes for you to understand in class
- Bring the correct material to the lecturers
KEY ACTIONS TO NOTES AS YOU OBSERVE YOUR INSTRUCTORS:
√ Be alert to repitition
- Be alert and make notes when the instructor repeat a specific point
√ Watch the board or overhead projector
- The material is important when the instructor write something
√ Aware of instructor’s level of interest
- If the lecturer is excited about something, it may be on test or exam
√ Not judging about lecturer’s style of teaching
- Do not make attitude on the style of lecturer’s teaching
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR INSTRUCTOR IS NOT TOO INTERESTING ?
- When you start losing attention, pay attention to the act of writing
- Ask questions
- Volunteer for demonstrations and discussions
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR LECTURES IS NOT TOO INTERESTING ?
♦ Sits in front of the class
- It becomes harder to fall asleep
- Easier to read because near to the white board
- Helps the lecturer to see you easily
